Mei Mei: 「KAMI」: "KAMI"

Sokyo Gallery is pleased to present Marta Corada’s solo exhibition “Kami”. This is her first exhibition at our gallery, and the first time her work has been seen in Japan. Marta, who uses the name Mei Mei as her artistic persona, takes us into a personal fantasy world through a series of sculptures bringing to life a mysterious and unique mythology - steeped in a language at once beguiling and contemporary.

Her work introduces us to the craft of felting. Traditionally considered a female skill, and confined to a domestic environment, this has been used since ancient times to create clothing and decorative items. She has adopted an intricate needle felting technique and developed its potential to promote this in the contemporary art world - showing her work in places such as the Saatchi Gallery, in London.

She began her career as a photographer after completing her studies in Fine Arts and Photography at the Universities of Salamanca and Barcelona in 2008, and has received widespread recognition since, exhibiting with galleries in London, Madrid and Shanghai. She has received numerous awards and her work is held in private collections in the UK and abroad.

Twenty-sixteen marked a turning point in her career as an artist - entering on a new trajectory as she embarked on a course to develop her sculptural work, presented here for the first time in a major solo exhibition. Embracing sculpture has allowed her to re-awaken her spiritual side: a transformation in her personal and professional development, revealing itself in a number of media.  Returning to drawing, assembling objects from her personal collection, sculpting in wool, foam or in clay ... drawing on her photographic background to bring the process full circle in creating editioned prints of her own work.
