Kim Jai Kwan: Post Relationship

Since he began his career as an artist in 1967, Kim Jai Kwan, who is known as a leading geometric abstract painter in South Korea, has developed geometric abstract works composed of grids. His works are pure abstractions based on geometric figures and principles. In other words, based on reason rather than sensibility, he has explored the fundamental principles that lie beneath the natural visible shapes and has attempted to give form to such principles. In addition to two-dimensional works, he has also used various materials, such as acrylic panel and stainless steel, to create three-dimensional artworks. The works displayed in this exhibition combine Korean paper with light colors, vertical and horizontal lines, and a canvas with a shape based on such grid lines to create compositions with profound depth for two-dimensional art.

The word "relationship" is especially important in Kim's work. "Relationship" cannot exist in isolation; it necessitates a counterpart. Therefore, it has a structure of “between.” From a structural point of view, Kim's works can ultimately be seen as derivatives of "between": the space between lines, and the space between surfaces.

From an Oriental worldview, the artistʼs works imply the relationship of "Heaven, Earth, and Humankind," which places people between the sky and earth. This overlaps with the history of Koreaʼs Hangul alphabet, which was developed based on this worldview, and also creates an interesting similarity to Kimʼs works that focus on the structure of the space between things.

Based in his hometown of Cheongju, South Korea, Kim has held a number of solo exhibitions not only in Korea but also in Japan, the U.S., and France. His works are owned by art museums and public facilities worldwide. Take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of geometric abstract paintings created by the artist.
