Kyoto, September 18, 2024 - Sokyo (Gion main gallery) and Sokyo Annex (Kawaramachi-Nijo) are delighted to present the two-person exhibition Sylvie & Umetsu. La maison hantée? featuring Paris-based artist Sylvie Auvray and Yoichi Umetsu. Unlike the orderly exhibitions typically held in museums and galleries, this show, held concurrently with the special exhibition Yoichi Umetsu: Crystal Palace at the National Museum of Art, Osaka, is intended as a fun-filled space reminiscent of visiting a haunted house (as the French title implies). However, it may not be as universally enjoyable by people of all generations as the haunted houses found at amusement parks. The haunted house concept is invoked in order to raise questions: where is the actual audience for art, and what are the performative qualities of art exhibitions?
