The new wave of textile art that emerged in Europe in the 1950s and 60s, moving beyond utility, spread to the United States and marked a new development in fiber art. After graduating from university, Kusama, inspired by the innovative works of artists like Lenore Tawney, decided to move to the U.S., where he experienced the blossoming of this movement firsthand throughout the 1970s. Upon returning to Japan, Kusama became a leading figure in fiber art, participating in various exhibitions and competitions both domestically and internationally, receiving high acclaim for his work.
Kusama has also focused on expanding his works through different structures and scales, placing them into spaces that differ from traditional museum settings, particularly public spaces. His works encourages viewers to reconsider the spatial structure or even reconstructs the space itself.
In recent years, Kusama has sought more three-dimensional expressions, using the coiling technique to wrap threads directly around resin and stainless steel, creating works under the concept of "OPTICAL ILLUSION." In this exhibition, he will be presenting 20 new works. The colorful fibers, emerging from one end of a black acrylic board, twist and spiral toward the other end, creating a flow. While the lines remain monochromatic, they form a variety of surfaces, revealing different expressions depending on the angle, in a series of tense, sculptural works.
