Yuichiro Kikuma: Traces of Summer: "Traces of the Summer"

Yuichiro Kikuma: Traces of Summer

Dates: Thursday, October 6, 2022 - Wednesday, November 2

Venue: Sokyo Annex

Sokyo Annex (Kyoto) is pleased present Yuichiro Kikuma’s solo exhibition, “Traces of the Summer,” which is his first solo exhibition at Sokyo.

Kikuma is a London-based artist who has been expressing incidental events that happen in daily life as artworks. In this exhibition, he focuses on the shapes of plants he observed in South London, and presents works based on the theme of the rhythm that resides in these shapes. Plants by the side of the road, which are usually overlooked, actually have their own unique lines and forms. By repeating and overlapping these forms, vibrant patterns are created. Kikuma sprays the plants on the canvas with diluted sumi ink to reproduce their patterns as silhouettes. It can be said to be life-size negatives of the motif like a cyanotype, but at the same time Kikuma attempts to extract from them a kind of heartbeat generated by aggregation of each living plant.

We hope you will enjoy viewing these “Traces of the Summer” that caught the artist’s eye in the midst of the changing days.
