'Mishima Kimiyo ー Memories for the Future'
From Sunday, May 19, 2024 to Sunday, July 7, Nerima Art Museum will be presenting the solo exhibition "Kimiyo Mishima: Memories for the Future".
This exhibition provides an overview of Mishima's creative path over the past 70 years through his major works. While casting a critical eye on mass consumption and the information society, Mishima's works, which transform information and waste into figurative expression, have been created with a playful spirit from everyday life.
The exhibition will feature Mishima's early collage works, a number of objects made from "breakable printed matter" and recent works made from environmentally friendly materials, with the highlight being her largest installation work, "Memory of the 20th Century". The work consists of a large number of brick blocks laid out on the floor, the surface of which is covered with newspaper articles taken from the last 100 years of the 20th century. This work visualizes memory fragments of 20th century as well as Mishima's own memories of that period. We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity to take a fresh look at the memories of the 20th century that Mishima has printed on her work as memories for the future to come.
